The decision to change Turkey’s name is a part of a whole rebranding strategy under the leadership of the Turkish president Recep Tayıp Erdoğan. It aims to increase the value of the country’s brand globally. Moreover, according to president Erdoğan, “Türkiye” reflects the Turkish culture and history in a more valuable way. Furthermore, it also refers to the Turks and the Turkish language. Therefore, he explained an aim to make it a global and unique label.

Moreover, he also explained his willingness to remove the confusion with other designations in English. In fact, we all know that “Turkey” refers to a bird name. Moreover, the old term Turkey refers to a stupid and unsuccessful person in North American English.

Turkey’s name change campaign has already started in December

Turkey’s name relabelling strategy has started since last December. The government has begun pursuing a process to change the country. Thus it aims to strengthen the country’s brand image.

In fact, official media has been using “Türkiye” for months. Moreover,  a state ad campaign encouraging foreigners to use “Türkiye” has been running on Turkish Airlines flights and other promotional videos.

Furthermore, the Ministry of foreign affairs has updated its name to “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the Republic of Türkiye.”  Moreover, The president previously required the usage of “Made in Türkiye” to be used on exported items instead of “Made in Turkey.”

As part of its efforts to change Turkey’s name, the government created a promotional video this year. Tourists from all around the world exclaim “Hello Türkiye” at well-known locations in the film.

What reactions does “Türkiye” get?

This decision hasn’t so far gotten explicit reactions from the international community. However, on the other hand, local attitudes are varied and contentious. Some individuals applaud the government’s action. They think it’s a good idea to promote Turkish culture and origins. They also regard it as a courageous move to improve the country’s global recognition. Others believe it is preferable to eliminate any potential mistake with the bird’s name or any other English term. They admit that any dependent country has not to follow a foreign language rule when selecting a title that symbolizes its uniqueness.

The name rebranding strategy goes on well with Turkey’s 2023 vision concept. In fact, The Turkish government has set a challenging objective to develop the country’s economy. Therefore, the enhancing strategy includes different sectors such as energy, trade, real estate, foreign policy, and tourism.

This was announced by then-Prime Minister (now President) Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2013, who indicated his willingness to realize this vision by 2023. It would be the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Turkish Republic.

This agenda has the name “Turkey’s 2023 Vision.” It is based on a set of goals that all work together to achieve a single constitutional goal. Turkey’s target for 2023 is to become one of the world’s top 10 economies.
