Turkey will inaugurate The Kağıthane-Istanbul Airport metro line with the attendance of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Sunday, January 22, 2023, according to Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoğu. He stated that the metro line can serve 800 thousand passengers each day.

The Istanbul Airport Metro Line M11, also known as the M11 Gayrettepe-Istanbul Airport-Halkalı Metro Line, is a rapid transit line that is currently under-constreuction in Istanbul, Turkey. Yet, the  Turkish minister of transportation and infrastructure stated recently that the line  Kağıthane–Istanbul Airport segment will open on January 22, 2023.

Actually, this line’s objective is to give rapid and easy access from Istanbul airport situated in Arnavutköy to Halkalı, one of the city’s most significant train stations, and Levent, the city’s primary business district. Therefore,  the M11 will be a restricted stop service, which means that stations will be wider separated than on other metro lines. In fact, This is most evident in the southern ends of the line, where there will only be seven stations on the M11 within the city limits of Istanbul which are:  Halkalı, Tema Park, Olimpiyat, Kayaşehir, and Fenertepe in the west, and Gayrettepe and Kağıthane in the east.

The Istanbul Airport metro line will have 2 legs; one from Halkal to Istanbul Airport and one from Gayrettepe to Istanbul Airport. Moreover,  the initial segment of the rapid transit line will have nine stops with a length of 37.2 kilometers (23.1 mi).  Besides, a total of 69 km (43 mi) with sixteen stations will make up the second section of the line, which will be 31.5 km (19.6 mi) long and have seven stations. Conseqyently,  the M11 will be among the world’s longest continuous subway tunnels when all the works  finish.  Furthermore, At a top speed of 120 km/h, the distance between the end stations will take 60 minutes to complete (75 mph). 

Istanbul airport metro line will serve 6 neighborhoods of Istanbul: Şişli, Kağıthane, Eyüpsultan, Arnavutköy, Başakşehir, and Küçükçekmece. The M11 will have sixteen stations in total, only seven of which are in the Istanbul metropolitan area.

A €999.8 million cost 

The construction’s investment budget is €999.8 million.In facti,  in December 2016, the Turkish construction company Kolin-enbay has the chance to the contract to construct the metro line. The government tried to finish the metro line by the airport’s official opening on October 29, 2018.

The opening of the Istanbul Airport metro line will facilitate access to Istanbul Airport. To explain, it will be accessible and people can  reach in 24 minutes from Kağıthane and 12 minutes from Göktürk.  Moreover, the line will be integrated with the Metrobus and Hacosman-Yenikap Metro Zincirlikuyu Stations in the spring. Besides, another 3,5 kilometers will join the line to bring the total length  to 37,5 kilometers, according to Minister of Transportation Karaismailoğlu. He also emphasized that the line was integrated with the Mahmutbey metro and Kağıthane in the first stage.

An important economic gain 

The Turkish minister of Transportation and infrastructure emphasized the importance of economic gain of this important infrastructure project. He explained that when we look at the projection for the years 2023–2043 with the introduction of the Metro Line, these advantages will become more apparent. According to the 20-year projection, Turkey will experience a total economic gain of 45 billion 247 million euros, including 30 million euros from improved highway operation and maintenance, 2 million euros from environmental improvements, 316 million euros from fewer accidents and injuries, and 2 billion 639 million euros from reduced travel time.
