New agreements signed in May 2022 between Turkiye and Algeria
The Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had a visit to Ankara in May. During this visit, Turkiye and Algeria inked a number of new agreements as they work to expand their bilateral ties and bolster cooperation, with an emphasis on the defense industry in particular.
Following one-on-one discussions and meetings between their delegations, Erdoğan and Tebboune observed the signing of bilateral agreements in several sectors, including mining and environment as well as education and culture.
The two presidents talked about how to advance their shared interests in global issues as well as bilateral collaboration. They also discussed enhancing their collaboration in other crucial areas like security, agriculture, and tourism.
Tebboune’s visit to Turkiye was the country’s first by a president since the late Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s 2005 visit. To strengthen ties, the two countries signed accords of friendship and cooperation in 2006.
We would like to remind that Turkish embassy in Algiers opened right after Algeria’s independence in 1963.
Economy partners
Turkiye considers Algeria as the region’s island of political and economic stability and its main business partner in Africa. Accordingly, there are almost 1,000 Turkish companies operating in Algeria with an investment volume of 3.5 billion dollars. Moreover, with a total trade volume of 4.5 billion dollars, Algeria is Turkiye’s 23rd largest export market and 25th largest source of imported products. Meanwhile, Turkiye ranks as Algeria’s sixth-largest economic partner with oil and gas-related products as Algeria’s top exports. Furthermore, Turkey is the source of Algeria’s largest imports of building supplies.
