The Turkish Citizenship law adopts basically the jus sanguinis principle. In other words, any person with a Turkish father or a Turkish mother is a Turkish citizen by birth, even outside the wedlock. Moreover, Turkish Citizenship law allows multiple citizenships. Yet, foreigners have the right to the acquisition of Turkish Citizenship under certain conditions and through specific methods.
Methods of Acquisition of Turkish Citizenship after birth
After birth, a foreigner or a stateless person can obtain Turkish citizenship after the competent authority’s decision. Certainly, this includes different conditions leading to Turkish Citizenship eligibility.
Acquisition of Turkish Citizenship by marriage
Any foreign national married to a Turkish Citizen for at least 3 years is eligible to acquire Turkish citizenship. However, the authority requires certain conditions. Firstly, the applicants must live together as a family. Moreover, they must not commit any act that threatens the family’s unity. Furthermore, they must not form any risk to national security.
Firstly, applicants must submit the required documents. Then an evaluation procedure starts, and a province commission examines the validity of the marriage through an interview with the applicants. After that, it sends the document to the Interior affairs ministry to decide.
Most importantly, divorce or the death of a Turkish spouse after the acquisition of Turkish citizenship does not cancel it.
Acquisition by Investment
Foreign investors are welcome to apply for citizenship by investing in Turkey. To clarify, with recent legislative reforms, the Turkish Republic began to issue citizenship to individuals who invest in Turkey. Yet, it doesn’t require a minimum period of residence.
– Through an investment of a specific amount
Foreign nationals who make an investment worth 500,000 USD dollars or its equivalent in Turkish lira are eligible for obtaining Turkish citizenship. Yet, they must invest in Turkey, in any sector.
– Through real estate investment
Foreign nationals who purchase one or multiple properties worth 250,000 USD or its equivalent in Turkish lira have the right to get Turkish citizenship. However, the property must be in their name for at least 3 years. But, they can apply for Turkish citizenship as soon as they get the title deed.
– Through bank deposit
Depositing an amount of 500,000 USD in a Turkish bank acquires foreigners the right to obtain Turkish citizenship. Moreover, the applicant commits not to transfer the money for 3 years starting from the deposit date.
– Through Job creation
To reduce the unemployment rate in Turkey, the government gives the eligibility to foreign investors who open companies in Turkey under the condition to create jobs for at least 50 Turkish citizens.
Obtaining the Turkish Citizenship by work Permit
Foreign nationals who have been working legally in Turkey with a valid work permit for consecutive 5 years are eligible to apply for Turkish citizenship. Yet, they should prove their willingness to live permanently in Turkey. Moreover, they should have a decent income to cover their expenses and those of their dependent relatives.
Getting the T.C by roots proving
Foreigners who can prove belonging to ottoman ancestry or any other Turkish origins are eligible to apply for Turkish citizenship.
To clarify, applicants must submit official documents belonging to the Ottoman era to prove their descendence. Then, the competent authority examines these documents and compares them with the ottoman archive. In case of conformity, the court declares the naturalization.
Exceptional eligibility for Turkish citizenship
The Turkish government can reward some foreign nationals with the naturalization of Turkish citizenship if they bring benefits to the country. To clarify, these benefits can be in science and technology, arts, or sports. In fact, the competent authority invites foreigners to apply for Turkish citizenship.
Procedure’s steps
Firstly, the applicant submits the required documents to the competent authority, the application goes through 8 steps without a specific period for each step.

Step1:
Firstly, your application has been registered in the e-citizenship system by the application authority. Therefore, the relevant authority will start the necessary work and procedures.
Step2:
The relevant authority has sent the documents to the general directorate but they have not been received yet.
Step3:
Your application documents have reached our General Directorate and a preliminary examination started.
Step4: Level 1
Your application has reached our general directorate, and the relevant authority examines the application documents.
Step4: Level 2
Your application has been sent to the relevant institutions for archival research.
Step4: Level3
The research and evaluation process of your application continues.
Step5: Level 1
Your application is in the approval phase. After that, it will be included in the list to submit to the decision authority.
Step5: Level 2
Your application for the acquisition of Turkish citizenship is included in the list to be submitted to the decision authority.
Step6: Level 1
Your application for the acquisition of Turkish citizenship has been sent to the decision authority for a decision.
Step6: Level 2
Your application for acquiring Turkish citizenship is in the process of being finalized.
Step7:
To notify you of the result of the application for the acquisition of Turkish citizenship, you must apply to the application’s authority.
