There has been a significant increase in demand recently in Istanbul and throughout Turkey’s real estate market. This is a result of the advanced level that Turkey’s building industry has attained so far, in addition to many other economic, social, and cultural characteristics. In fact, the development of new technology, advanced building materials, and cutting-edge architectural styles have all helped Turkey’s construction industry reach new heights. Therefore, Istanbul architecture especially is home to many modern illustrations of iconic buildings that made the world talk.
Istanbul’s modern iconic buildings
Istanbul Airport:
Many pioneers and internationally renowned architecture firms, including Grimshaw Architects, Nordic Office of Architecture, Haptic Architects, and Scott Browning, worked together to create the enormous gateway to Istanbul. Therefore, with its unique design concept, Istanbul Airport constitutes one of the country’s landmarks and most iconic buildings in Istanbul.
“A smooth and seamless transition from landside to airside” served as the foundation for the primary architectural idea. Moreover, its tulip-shaped control tower pays homage to the Ottoman area, adding a modern touch. It also demonstrates the cultural influences of the old city. The airport, which has a capacity of 90 million passengers annually, was the busiest airport in Europe in June 2022.
Istanbul Telecommunication Tower
The futuristic TV and Radio tower situated in çamlica is another example of the iconic buildings in Istanbul. It supports 125 broadcasting transmitters. With a height of 369 meters (589 meters above sea level), the tower is Istanbul’s highest structure, surpassing even the famous Eiffel Tower by 5 meters.
Melike Altinsik, Daniel Widrig, and Florian Dubiel worked together to create this masterpiece, which features a distinguished design. It exudes vitality and rhythm due to its changing silhouette. Moreover, the tower uses cutting-edge materials, including 145 meters of steel that are supported by 203 meters of concrete. Wind tests have been conducted on the tower to assess its stability.
With its cafes, restaurants, exhibition halls, conference rooms, and observation deck with a stunning view of the Bosporus, the tower became a landmark in Istanbul.
Bahçekoy house an iconic house in Istanbul
The home, which is located in Bahçekoy, Istanbul, for a family of four in 2018, was designed by Habif Architects. The basic idea behind the project is to create open-plan living spaces with strong linkages and a smooth transition to the outside via transparent openings and terraces. As a result, open space was created with both an introverted and an extroverted architectural design, maintaining interior seclusion. The house actually gives off a big and powerful appearance from the exterior thanks to its concrete and stone façade. But from the outside, we are looking at a really open, airy area with a naturally lit indoor garden. The architect insisted on using natural materials like wood, hand-poured concrete, and stone to keep his design as organic as possible.
Sancaklar Mosque
Sancaklar mosque, designed by Emre Aolat architects in a suburban region of Istanbul, generated an important situation of controversy due to its divisive architecture. In fact, it conquered all of the conventional mosque designs and developed a fresh idea that creates a border with the outside and breaks the connection to give the prayers a serene prayer environment while maintaining their “connection with God.”
The mosque’s design emphasizes its relationship to nature through its understated external shapes. The only component that is visible and makes the mosque’s presence known is a canopy that is 6 meters high. The rest of the mosque blends in with the surroundings as it gradually emerges from its natural framework. This unprecedented architectural style especially in religious constructions made Sancaklar mosque one of the iconic buildings in Istanbul. The Royal Institute of British Architects awarded the mosque a global prize in 2018.
The construction sector in Turkey
The government’s initiatives to enhance the transportation and energy infrastructure made the Turkish construction industry have a CAGR of more than 4% since 2018. Similar to many other emerging nations, Turkey’s economy is particularly reliant on the construction sector. Therefore, the government implemented strong strategies and important incentives for investors that operate in the construction and real estate sectors. Consequently, these huge efforts contributed to the construction of several iconic buildings in Istanbul mainly and all of Turkey in general.
